A Cabinet of Curiosities

This sculpture was inspired by wunderkammers and cabinet of curiosities of the European Renaissance. It plays on the idea from the sixteenth century of a wunderkammer consisting of collected objects awaiting categorization. Since all of the objects in the sculpture are all made from repurposed and discarded materials, these new items also await categorization, or a re-categorization of waste as an artistic medium.

I wanted to create a space where every surface was occupied by a beautiful object, a work of art, a carefully-made textile, or an artifact from a land far away. I wanted the space to feel full and to thoroughly permit the eye to endlessly roam and explore, to draw wonder from the repurposed materials.
